Thanks everyone for your input on this. I was pretty sure I was right in doing this but I didn't want to ruin my new regulator or generator. It is a Pos / Neg regulator, so it can be used both ways. I'm in the process of putting the tractor back to 6 volt down the road as soon as I get the correct 6v lights.
