One purpose of the venturi is to suck gas into the carb throat when the throttle is open. No gas or not enough gas makes it too lean so it won't run or will backfire.

An intake leak will usually affect the idle but not open throttle.

Are you sure you're adjusting the main jet and not the idle mixture? 4.5 turns seems like an awful lot, usually they are around 1.5-2. I'm talking carbs in general now, I'm not familiar with the 574 so don't hold me to that.
