F4 magneto question

In an F4, the coil wires lead to a piece called the secondary leadout and spring. There are 2 wires. I found upon removing the cover that one wire has a substantial gap in it. I didnt find any broken pieces of wire inside. Is this done purposely (I cant see why)? I see no evidence of arcing across this gap. Is it just a broken wire or what? I cant tell from any pictures I have. Looks like that could be a ground wire. TIA
