Schultzy: I don't think you will get enough power from any 4 cylinder IH diesel. As others said 282 and 301 will bolt right up. The biggest problem you will have converting any old gas truck to diesel will be rear end ratio. Most of those old gassers were turning somewhere between 2500 and 3000 rpm at highway speed. If you turn those diesels that high, they will not last any longer than the gasser, and probably will not save you any fuel. I doubt if you can find rear end gears to change that. Larger wheels and tires will help, but not enough. The other matter you should consider even with those 6 cylinders, is power. GM, Ford and Dodge are all using engines over 360 cubic inch. They haven't exactly been a model of efficiency. They are turning them too high on rpm. Diesel efficiency comes from taking advantage of max. torque at or near 1500 rpm. Years ago I had a 6.2 diesel with 3.24 rear end gears 1800 rpm was 60 mph. A neighbor had a Ford 6,9 with 3.06 gears. We both got close to 30 miles to the Can. gallon. Most of those trucks got 4.10 gears and didn't give any better milage than the gassers.
