As a carry over from the F series tractors, the earlier cultivators were "Steerable" by the use of a bracket that bolted to the vertical shaft in the upper bolster. The insert had to be removed to attach that bracket and many farmers simply left the insert off and the bracket on for when they mounted the cultivators. A lot of these inserts ended up hung on the wall of the machine shed or in the scrap heap next to the gas barrell and were forgotten about. I'm sure some just worked loose and were plowed under in the fields and never replaced.
