Shep, At the inside of the left cowl panel, lying horizontally at the bottom, is the power bus. The wires connecting to this bus will get corroded just like a bad battery connection will often do, sometimes the lugs will even get to the point of turning green and breaking off and thereby breaking your 12-volt power connection. FWIW, this is also the culprit that started so many of the fires on these 656s. I would have a new one at the ready before you attempt to take the old one out, because for sure after 40 years, it is going to be broken and corroded, or maybe even just the act of pulling the panel out away from the dash is going to put enough pressure on it to make it give way.
