Don - Gotta be either a lean condition at the carb, or possibly weak ignition. First make sure the ignition system is in top condition: New plugs; good, solid copper plug wires; clean, crack-free distributor cap; clean and properly gapped points; timing set to spec, etc. If the problem persists it’s a lean carburetor condition. First make sure you are using freshly purchased fuel. (If the gas was purchased last summer the lighter fractions have flashed off and what’s left doesn’t vaporize as readily when it’s cold.) Enriching the load mixture can help: Open the load screw 1/8 – ¼ turn. If it’s humid it could also be carb icing (icing is worst right around 35 – 40 degrees). Unfortunately there’s not a lot that will help carb icing when the engine is first started except perhaps to preheat the engine with the block heater. Hope this helps, and stay warm!
