Andy - That's a problem with many of the cheaper 1 wire alternators! (They "leak" a small amount of current when shut down....) One solution is to swap it for another 1 wire unit and hope the new one leaks less current than the one you've got.

Another solution is to install a manual isolation switch in the alternator line, or install a master switch in a battery cable. But NEVER open the switch with the engine running or you will be buying another alterator when the one you've got self-destructs!

Or you can swap the 1 wire for a traditional 3 wire unit - properly wired up of course.
