They are not the most rare tractor ever created by IH, however, they are rare compared to the W-6 that they replaced. They are very similar to their taller cousins (the Farmall 400). They use a similar channel front frame, rear-end, hydraulics,and engines. However, there is nothing similar about the way they ride. It is like comparing an M to a W6, they are NOT the same tractor. The standard tread tractors are, in my opinion, more comfortable, shorter (nice for fields with trees), easier to work on(in most but not all cases)and more fun to operate for hay work, such as raking, baling, and conditioning. However, the Farmalls have a better turning radius (it isn't even a contest),have more traction, more pulling power(because of the higher weight and larger tires), and ride nicer in bumpy fields(because of the larger tires). I don't know if they are more popular out west or not. They are still a little small for Western use. Those are more the 600s and the 650s. I have only seen 1 W-400 in the last 18 years, so they are rare to me! Hope that answers your question.
