Water Jacket Flush advice on '47 H

Pulling the block drain plug revealed a buildup of scale and sludge which I'd like to flush out before using my tank heater. The engine and tractor overall have been in good shape - I've been able to loosten any bolt or nut I wanted to without breaking it. I've never flushed a water jacket so I'm wondering how to do it. Does one remove both the plate behind the carb and the plate behind the distributor (after removing both those units first)? I think the radiator is pretty clear (looks so from the top) so I'm thinking I can just flush out the areas around the cylinders with this attack. Are the bolts prone to be problematic or do they usually come out easily? I'm planning on fabricating the replacement gaskets unless someone tells me that's not a good idea in this case. I'm trying to get an overview of the job in an effort to get it done tomorrow. In a couple of days we'll be catching up with you plains folks - getting our due of freezing temperatures. I'd just as soon get this task done in my unheated barn before then.
