set it so the points are just starting to open at TDC pointer on rotor looking toward #1 plug wire. I'm sure you know that. Start the tractor; with engine running at a nice easy idle rotate distributor until it runs easiest, the turn it clockwise till it just starts to labor. You should be good to go. When you pull the trottle open motor should pick up quicly. If motor trys to kick back when starting you've got it a tad fast.
