If the cranking pin in the front of the crankshaft is straight across then you are real close to TDC on either 1 or four. stick a piece of bailing wire in number 1 if the piston isn't right there turn engine one half turn. use wire to find tdc. Kinda a crude method but that's what dad taught in the late 40.s
