Kelly, the way I do it is I take the #1 plug out and put my finger over the hole and have someone bump the starter. When the compression pushes your finger out you know you are comming up on the compression stroke for #1. Then line the crank pulley up on TDC and position your point to just open for #1 on the distributor. This will get you close.
