I think that those pieces that you are catching in your filter and in the pump are parts of the friction material on the brake discs. I believe that on the 454, 574, and 674, the brakes are wet type brakes. This means that the discs and the friction material are submerged in oil. When the friction material gets old and worn, it breaks off and falls into the transmission and gets sucked into the filter. I know that the brakes are located inside each of the axle housings. They are not like the 06 or 66 series brakes where you can just remove them and ship them to the dealer for rebuilding. Replacing the friction discs requires removing each of the axle housings. That is my guess, but check with other people on this board to make sure, as I have never actually worked on or replaced them before.
