This is a leak down test if it's done with a leak down tester and its a good way to look for engine troubles or to determine how "good" an engine actually is in terms of % overall cylinder leakage(rings/cylinder and valves). One can use it to diagnose a problem by finding where the air is leaking to, either into the sump, intake or exhaust at TDC or other piston positions on the compression stroke. Pressures around 100 psi are used so you do have to be careful to secure the crank at other than TDC and should you choose not to secure at TDC at least beware it can roll over suddenly if not right on top, TDC.
