You can return it to the drain connection on the belly pump. Running the pump through your control valve may result in overheating and loss of pressure upon extended use. I have planned on making a flat reservoir to mount outboard and below of the engine starter. 1-1/2 or 2 gallon reservoir with internal baffles to hold down air entrainment and force the oil in a sideways W path with the oil entering the bottom and coming out below the top would provide more fluid and more cooling which should help the overheating issue. Of course the tank will need a vent and be installed so the fluid levels are about the same in the reservoir and belly pump. My tractors tend to overheat in 100 deg weather when the belly pump is engaged for an extended period of time.
