HMM...gasoline and air make the fuel mix so logically there is a problem in the system that puts those two components together...airway..is the breather open and proper filter/oil bath serviced? a mouse nest or some other unexpected thing could be the problem. Next is the carburetor properly adjusted for high and low idle. The tractor should idle with a nice "roll" to it without black smoke evident. Make sure the tractor has a warm up before putting it to the test, a cold engine does not always burn all its fuel and you will smell gasolene on the oil dip stick, even to the point that the oil is diluted with gasoline and should be changed. Use shutters or a front grill cover to help get the operating temperature that you need. I am still suspicious of your carb. A float may appear to be set properly but that doesn't mean it won't stick and cause flooding. A float can also have a leak in it and when put back together the float won't float correctly, being saturated with gasoline. I am convinced that your description suggests that it is a carb problem, however do you have good spark and is the timing on? Any of these things could cause fuel consumption and rough running. Check your spark for a good blue flash then you know where to continue from, wish I was close by to have a peek but wish you good luck in getting the problem solved....Mike in Exeter Ontario

That was 10 years before I was born, so I grew up thinking that 8N was the world's best tractor. Grandpa had greenhouses, with over half an acre under glass, and that 8N did almost everything. It was the only
