The one wire alternator is fine.The wire should be hooked to an ignition source terminal thats only hot with the switch on,this will excite the alternator and it will cut out as long as it has an internal regulator.The reason it drains the battery is because it is hooked to a source thats continually hot,and that drains the battery.
