50 wt. engine oil and 90wt gear oil are the same viscosity. Strange huh? Had a semi once that called for 50 wt. engine oil in tranny, asked tech why, and he said that it was the same viscosity as 90 wt. gear oil but had additives that helped to keep the tranny cleaner. So I guess switching to 50 wt. engine oil would not be any help except to clean housing and then switch back to gear oil or Hy-Tran.
