Thats getting hot because you are cranking the starter too much.You should have an ignition problem,and no amount of cranking is going to solve it until you can track the problem down. Leaving the key on should only ruin the coil,points,resistor (maybe not all of these at the same time,but they are all live when keyed on).If these are all replaced and the problem still exists,its possible something unrelated is wrong and its a giant coincidence.If the cap and rotor need to be replaced anyway,do those now too....not that it would solve the problem,but it will eliminate one more problem area.Also,check the glass fuel bowl for sediment/plugged screen...just in case too.Might even put new plugs in....heck...go for a full tune up! lol
