The L means it was built in Louisville, if it had an F or perhaps no designation it would have been built at the Farmall plant. There were about 12000 SM's built at Louisville, something over 50000 at the Farmall plant. The J means the clutch was made by Rockford, the A that the engine was designed to run on distillate, perhaps a little rare for a 1953 model, but IH produced distillate tractors for a few years after that. HP about 36 distillate, gasoline was 42, weighs about 5100 lbs, it was the largest Farmall built at that time. As Andy says, more info can be had by asking specific questions.
