Once you get close to TDC on #1 with the starter, you can put the tractor in 5th gear and rock the rear wheel. If you have the plugs out, you might be able to turn it over with the fan belt. With the valve cover off, #1 will be at TDC, of the compression stroke when the pointer lines up with the mark on the pulley and both valves on the front cylinder are closed (you will be able to wiggle both rockers arms with your fingers). On some motors you can see the edge of a valve through the spark plug hole when #1 is at TDC between the exhaust and intake strokes. I have not looked lately, but seem to recall that does work for the H. If not, someone will be along to set things straight.
