I agree that larger diameter deepens the tone, but
length of pipe has an effect also. The longer you can
get it, like the old straight piped cars, the sweeter the
sound. When I was a kid my dad had a Ford flathead
V8 running a sawmill with about 20 feet of pipe to carry
the exhaust out of the building. I never did get tired of
sitting outside where that pipe came through and
listening to that flattie sing.
