The auxiliary wiring plug terminals should be clearly marked with 1 and 2 on the alternator. If the terminals are not marked, or if they are marked R and F its not an internally regulated alternator and it will not work wired this way. If you DO have an internally regulated alternator, its wired correctly and the warning lamp stays dark the cause is either a bad alternator or a burned out bulb. Electrically it wont harm the alternator for it to touch the sheet metal. However over time vibration will wear a hole in the alternator frame or thru the sheet metal where they touch. Instead put a bit of padding like a piece of rubber floor mat between the alternator and the hood to separate them.
