Never good when you suddenly lose power and develop a knock. If your crankshaft and block are still good, rebuild it. Nothing else that fits beats the 310. A 358 is the only thing better, and it would bolt in, but good luck finding one. You could go to a gas or a glowplug diesel pretty easy, lots of 706's out there that you could get the engine and frame rails from, but the German engine is much more heavy-duty than that design.
