We did it with one of the pistons in a 92 series Detroit once. That motor is still going although if dad had to do it over again he would have probably done them all. It has also been my experience that it will probably need sleves as well. Did a ring job for a guy on a jd 4010 and the thing ran and smoked worse after the new rings were installed in the old sleeves. It really depends what your gonna be using the tractor for. Just throwin it out there for ya.
