In theory, you can however, does the spark plug show signs of oil consumption? Have you checked into the cost of rings for just one piston? Doing the air check on all the cylinders will help you discover the condition of the rest of the engine and you can go from there. I have noticed that some times purchasing one cylinder doesn’t save a whole lot of money when compared to a full set. Compare what you are saving (you will need a full set of gaskets etc) to what additional money it will cost you. Also, as Allen mentioned, how is the oil pressure? You might find that you need new bearings on the crank also. Yes, the list (and expense) can go on and on until you get everything fixed. I’m also curious as to why one cylinder would have bad rings as usually when you have a cylinder go down like that it is a burned valve. I suppose it could be broken or stuck rings on that piston, but then I would be curious and check the others too. Just some thoughts…
