the clutch housing has been changed sometime.If
starter has engaging switch on top with a rod to engage its later SM style starter.Several other starters would bolt up or could be made to work though.Without picture or discription,Don't know which starter you have.My opinion on why IH went to 3 bolts is less breakage and the use of same
clutch housing on later SM and SMD instead of two seperate Housings for Diesel and Gas.One other thing,later on IH sold replacement clutch housings
that were 3 bolt starter.Same M starter with different drive housing.
