I originally skipped this post because I know nothing about 504's. But,if your 504 has a Category 1 blade on a Category 2 hitch, there will be excessive play because the Cat 1 pins on the blade are spaced closer than the cat 2 hitch is supposed to run. If everything is Cat 1 or 2 and there is no adjustment as is indicated in your post below, I would put turnbuckles in the linkage. On the JD's I have driven the sway blocks can be turned for Cat 1 or 2. I bet Alan's tractor has adjustments on the sliders on his also, although his tractor is getting big for Cat 1 implements.
