Hi Scott, Forget the no power in fifth gear thing, it ain't a gonna have any power in fifth gear. Normal. The smoke from the breather. A certain amount is normal; excess is not. Can be caused by one of two things: Either that engine is full of mud and needs cleaned out, or you are getting a lot of blow-by. No, the only way fiddlin' with the timing could have hurt anything is if it was ran a long time with the timing advanced way too far under heavy load & has burned a hole in a piston. But, if this were the case, you would have a mosquito fogger on your hands. Also, it would kick back at you when you tried to start it. Allan
