I'd put it on a good-running 12v tractor with a resistor and if it puts out good spark it is a 6v coil.

Most coils are 6v. Chevy had their resistor wire and Ford had an internal resistor but the coil was really 6v so I don't think Smart Guy's suggestion would work. After you cut it apart you'd look for a resistor.
