It was a pinhole

Surprising how often what we know isn't in fact is.
I haven't time to explain all the details of how I got stupid lucky enough to find what was really wrong, but it involved dropping the oil cup full of 30wt on the sand floor of the shed.
As I was cleaning it I saw a bright spot in the bottom. Daylight. Impossible to see on the outside, no sign of a flaw in the paint.
A dab of JB and with luck it'll last until I forget about it.
