Thanks for the info, beginning to understand now. Lack of access to the petcocks must be the reason for the undrilled cast boss on the H and M blocks, my 41 H has that. My dad had either a U4 or U6 power plant used as an irrigation engine. It had a 200 gal or so gasoline tank set off away from the engine, so it had to have a fuel pump. Now I know also what the raised part of the cast under and to the rear of the carb is for. The serial number info I gave is in the H/4 series service manual, so I thought there should be both a chassis and engine serial. But I can see if it is a factory replacement block, as opposed to one out of another tractor, that it might be drilled for both dipstick and fuel pump, since IH would only have to have one set of replacement blocks, instead of undrilled ones for tractors, and drilled ones for the U series, and that at least the serial prefix might not be stamped. Still don't know why the serial was "ground off and restamped" though. Learn something everyday, which is why I read this forum.
