I find it sad, but that sounds typical. About 12 years ago, my 966 started getting water in the oil. My dad had bought it new, always took care of it and it only had about 5200 hours on it. I stopped at my most convenient CIH jockey (dealer is really a term that compliments more than he deserves) plaza and went in to visit the both the parts man and the sales man. First, I wanted to know what parts were included in his “overhaul special” and what they would cost me, and then I wanted to know how much he wanted for a nice looking 186 Hydro he had on the lot. All the parts man (who knew both my dad and me very well) would tell me was that I would only save a couple hundred dollars by overhauling it myself. The sales man offered me junk price for my 966 on trade in and wanted about 25% more to boot than his Hydro was really worth. I left and didn't go back for about 8 years, and I can count the number of times I've been there since on one hand. I found a lesser known CIH dealer a few miles further from me, and the parts guy there looked at the ad and priced out the parts at $1500 less (a savings of 60%) than what the total package was at the jockey’s place. Needless to say, I moved all my CIH business to this dealer and I’ve been a lot happier since.

Since this can be extremely difficult, you may want to fabricate the item or purchase a modern replacement temporarily, but eventually, you s
