Another possible reason for it being lean: We've got a 656 gasser and the inside of the gas tank is rusty and little bits of crud tend to come through and plug things up pretty often. Anything in the sediment bowl? Take the fuel line off at the carb and make sure there's a good stream of gas coming out there, and also check the screen at the carb inlet. You can also check for a bad intake gasket by spraying a little carb cleaner around the gasket area with it idleing, if the idle speed changes you've found a leak.
