Just got done needlessly chasing an electrical problem on a 454... would only get a click every once in a while when trying to start it, then it would come clear and start. I took for granted that the positive battery cable and connector was OK because it looked that way. It was an old stiff large-strand #2 cable. Replaced with a new #2 welding type cable and a new connector and now it starts and charges like a "new" tractor. I should have been checking for 12 volts at the solenoid when cranking... wouldn't have seen it with the old cable. Perhaps you should try using a voltmeter instead of a "light". Make sure you see your battery voltage at the starter. You'll find it,I'm sure!
