greg: New one to me. I've just spent a few min looking at the transmission diagram in IT manual. In neutral only top shaft turns, so it must be in top shaft or pto. A tooth damaged or off will only affect a specific gear. Given your description and looking at power train travel for each gear, I'd say front bearing on top shaft. I'm thinking this way as when 3rd-4th speed gear moves forward for 4th gear it gives enough stability to shaft, you don't hear the bearing. Don't take this as gospel, transmission noises can travel. I'm just trying to sort out what it can't be. Haven't been able to put front bearing on top shaft in the can't be catergory.
