Lance - I agree with the others. If the existing generator keeps the batteries up, leave it alone! Only when it gives trouble consider replacing it.

Advantages of an alternator over a generator: Cheaper to buy/replace. Requires less maintenance. Higher output at governed speed (good if you have extra lights, etc). Provides output at low speed (good if your tractor spends a lot of time idling).
