The break-up you are thinking of occured in 1917, and had nothing to do with Farmall. The government forced IH to sell off three of the five companies that originally made up IH, including Milwaukee Harvester, Champion, and Jones. They essentially only sold the machinery lines. The government also forced IH to reduce to only one dealership per city (previously they had up to five!) with many of these dealers going to John Deere. The two lines that were left, were combined, thus the name "McCormick-Deering" when they reduced the number of machines in a line to just one brand. Solely McCormick or Deering machines were still continued in a few machines until the late 1930s.
