Don't be too hasty to pull the Old Girl in two. Dad's M had a similar knock and it turned out to be the yolk on the transmission input shaft has split at the keyway and was loose. New Yolk and it's been fine ever since.... This was back in about 1968 or 1969. You didn't say if Your SH had the belly pump or not (Stage I or II) but the clutch should stop everything from turning in the transmission, and the pilot bearing is the most common thing to go wrong with them.
