Call it more of a phobia than anything else.I had never seen anything with such disregard for operator safety/well-being than a battery placed where that one is.To think they had a cigarette lighter socket on the dash...right above a battery pumping acid vapors out when charging!I consider this 300U more of an updating rather than a "restoration".Fix what the factory didnt/couldnt do,to move it into the 20th century anyway (alternator,electronic ignition,12V neg,gauze air filter,modern fluids...etc)..if they made an EFI system I probably would go for that too...however this starts/runs excellently without such an advance.
