You can check the starter by reconnecting the battery to the starter. You can short across the
solenoid with a screwdriver to see if the bendix
is energized and the the starter gear flies out
as if it was going to engage the ringgear.
Be very careful doing this and only touch the
terminals on the solenoid for a moment. Do not hold the screwdriver on there and have the gear spin without any load. Above all keep your hands,
fingers or loose clothing away from the starter
gear. You probably should take the starter to
an electric shop that does starters, generators and alternators and have it tested and cleaned. They have the equipment to load test it. The bearings could be worn too. Hal
