The 1B suffix means the engine came from the factory designed to run on gasoline at an altitude of 5000ft. The "1" after the first letter designated the fuel type. The other types were kerosene (3) and distillate (17). The standard gasoline engine had smaller combustion chambers resulting in a higher compression ratio. The "B" means the pistons were domed to increase compression a little bit more to make up for the thinner air. IHC also made an 8000ft. option with even higher compression.
