The 424 has a separate reservoir for the hydraulics. That is it does not use the transmission oil for the hydraulic system. Therefore, you can use tractor fluid (HyTran) in the hydraulics, and if you want to, gear oil(any 80-90W or 90-140 oil will work) in the transmission. However, you can also use the HyTran in the transmission and that may be best to avoid any confusion. I don't know the capacities, but I think the hydraulics are about 3 gallons. I owned a 424 for a few years. Good utility type tractor. Main reason I sold it was no power steering. Note also that the early models of the Mahindra tractors are almost exact copies of the 424 and many parts interchange. Mahindra parts are cheaper than from IH.
