They smoke black when they pull hard and I guess it depends on what you call a pretty steep hill.

I live up here in the hills and mine won't even begin to pull up this hill in 5th, stick back (smokes black like a banschee). But, it'll pull about anything else in 4th Hi.

Is your air cleaner okay?
