What I have used on cars and trucks for years is this: Get the clutch plate installed with little enough load you can still move it. Shine a bright light into the opening so you can see the pilot bearing clearly. Get you head or a mirror positioned so you can look straight into the pilot bearing. Line the clutch up so everything makes concentric circles, back of clutch spline, front of spline, back of bearing, front of bearing, grooves in flywheel. Snug up the pressure plate and the input shaft will fall in. But on an M, if you have not split it, you have the input shaft loose and can use it like a lineup tool.
