Yes, you need to split the tractor to replace the rear main seal. It also takes a special tool to set the seal at the correct depth. The tool can set the seal in three different 1/16 of an inch increments, so it wears on a different place of the crankshaft each time you replace it, so pay attention to where it is now. It definetly sounds like the TA is out. Sounds like a good time to do a complete TA job.
