Deereman87, The SMTA was the pinicle of the M series tractor. The old M with its wt. to hp. to size design was and still is one of the best out there. The standard M didn't not have live hydrolics or LPTO. These were the 2 main drawdacks of this tractor when they were new. The tech advancements of the day, finely added in 1954 everthing came together and the SMTA was born. But wait what is this TA thing. Torque Amplifies were IH newist secret weapon. Though Minnie Molines had been useing a similar product for a few yrs. The M platform, now armed with LPTO, Live Hydrolics, and the TA which alloud any gear to be split by simply pullin the TA lever back, and the tractor slowed down, engine RPM stayed UP and a hard spot in a field was gone through. These tractors are highly prised today. Not just because there were not that many produced, but that these tractors are just as functional today as they were in 1954. The addidtion of factory 2point happened in the next series of tractors. The number series 400/450s. Part are redally avaiible, for them. Overhaul kits. All tractor salvage yard can help locate parts. This forum is A Flowin Fountain fo Knowledge on IH, just ask. And there are good HD aftermarket 3pts hitches if you wish to add one. I would say Git-R-Done. Later, John A.
