A cutout is a simply voltage sensing relay. It connects the generator to the electrical system anytime the generator output voltage exceeds the relay "pull in" setting - about 7.0 volts for a 6 volt system.

The relay opens (cuts out) the generator circuit the anytime generator voltage drops below about 6.6 volts - to prevent the battery from discharging thru the generator.

A cutout does not provide any regulation of generator output current, ie as the battery charges up. This is the purpose of the L and H settings on the light switch. Set at H the generator charges at full current (about 15 amps for a Farmall); at L it limits charging current to 3 or 4 amps. Obviously then it's up to the operator to determine the battery charging rate.

You can easily replace the cutout with a voltage regulator if you want automatic charging current control!
