Bill: Not just sure I follow that shim stock recomendation either. There was a change in SA internal steering parts midway through production. I have never had one of the early ones apart, but understand the vertical shaft is a square taper at bottom end where steering control arm goes on. My tarctor is the newer version with round tapered shaft with woodruff key for steering control arm. I can only assume they are suggesting putting that shim stock around shaft so square cornered shaft or woodruff key don't damage seal in steering box base as you slide it up in position. That must be the concern. On those old tractors if you want to be precise with idle settings, get an rpm counter and do it from pto rpm 540 pto should give engine 1525 on SA, and high idle as well. You can calculate the rest from that.
